The following is a basic description of the required courses. 80 credits overall are needed to graduate.
24 Credits Of-- Bible Core Classes: Genesis, Acts, Romans, and Revelation are required. Each class is worth 3 credits. The total credits for these classes equals 12. The remaining four Bible core classes (worth 12 credits; 3 credits each) will be determined and announced before the start of each semester. Each core class is taught verse by verse, chapter by chapter. Students study in depth the unique characteristics and issues in each book. Careful consideration is given to the historical background, context and the author’s original intention when written. Lastly, application is given for the present day believer.
12 Credits Of-- Old & New Testament Survey Classes: There are 4 required Survey classes (OT101, OT102, NT101, NT102). Each is worth 3 credits. One is taken per semester and is done independently by the student. The student listens to Pastor Chuck Smith on audio cassettes as he teaches through the Bible. At the end of each week a small assignment is turned in for grading based on the tapes heard. Usually about six tapes per week are given. All students must take this class—no exceptions.
10 credits Of-- Required Subject Core Classes: The following five classes are worth 2 credits each and are required: Inductive Bible Study (IBS), Church History, Missions, Apologetics/Cults, Basic Theology. They will be offered on a rotating basis---two or three each semester.
4 Credits Of-- Lectures in Discipleship & Ministry: There are 4 required Lectures classes (TH130, TH131, TH132, TH133). One is taken per semester and is worth 1 credit. This class is not regularly scheduled each week but instead is organized when guest speakers, missionaries and pastors come to teach at the college. Each semester we have “Speakers Week” where most scheduled classes are set aside so that special attention can be given to the lectures presented by the guest speaker. The bulk of the Lectures requirement is fulfilled in this week.
4 Credits Of-- Public Devotional Speaking:
There are 4 required Devotion classes (LA120, LA121, LA122, LA123). One is taken per semester and is worth 1 credit. The entire student body meets each morning Mon.-Fri. before classes to worship, pray, receive announcements, and hear a short devotional given by their peers.
4 Credits Of-- Practical Christian Ministry (also known as Servanthood) There are 4 required Servanthood classes. The course number is M199 each semester. One is taken per semester and is worth 1 credit. This course typically requires 8-10 hours of a student's time per week. The purpose is to teach the student a practical skill that will help them in practical ministry, and that ministry is about serving with a joyful heart unto the Lord. Students are assigned a job area for the semester such as, housekeeping, dish room, kitchen cooking and preparation, landscaping, building or car maintenance, dining room care, childcare, library aid, computer technician, audio/visual technician, etc. We consider this a key class for it reveals the student’s heart as a servant.
4 Credits Of-- Evening Chapel & Friday Prayer: Every Thursday & Sunday evening throughout the semester, the entire student body meets for Chapel and Fellowship. Each semester this is worth 1 credit. Students share their hearts with one another and pray in small groups or corporately. Time is given to worship and waiting upon the Lord. Friday mornings is divided between the men and women and there is a small devotional teaching and then the class is divided into prayer groups that meet throughout the entire semester.
8 Credits Of-- Evangelism and Discipleship: There are 4 required Community Outreach classes (M359, M360, M361, M362). One is taken per semester and is worth 2 credits. Students meet weekly for a short study and then meet in assigned teams to pray and see how they might reach out to the local community to serve and evangelize. Also each student joins a separate outreach team that will go for one week in the semester and do missions work with an existing Calvary Chapel church somewhere in Europe.
